Total Income Tax Payers / Assesses in India
We have just received Information from the Ministry of Finance, Department of Revenue Assistant Director on the total number of Income Tax Assesses in India. Can you take a guess ? India’s population is around 1.1 bn while the Income tax assesses / payers are less than 4%. yes you have read that right. Here is how the Income Tax Payers Base in India looks like,
- FY 2006-07 – 3,19,25,978 [31.9 mn]
- FY 2007-08 – 3,26,87,220 [32.6 mn]
- FY 2008-09 – 3,33,98,571 [33.3 mn]
This also includes SMEs and others. We are waiting for further details and break up on Individuals and other categories of income tax payers in India. Stay tuned on, we will update it within couple of weeks.

There are 33 million tax payer in india which means less than 4% of the total population. In many European countries it is more than 20-40%
But i want to ask one thing that is among 33 million tax payers, how many actually pay tax. There are lot of people who makes there tax file in such way that they have to pay no tax at all.
