Apex body TRAI is considering a proposal to terminate charges either be done away or to be kept below 10 paise and is holding consultation for the same as the telecom industry is divided into two, between the existing operators and new players, on termination rates.
The existing players are vying for the maximum level possible while the newly players want to do away with it.
A section of new entrants Datacom, Unitech, Swan Telecom, Shyam, Loop and Reliance Communications opines that scrapping of termination charge or setting below 10 paise per minute would facilitate them on a par with established GSM operators as they would be able to slash mobile tariffs by at least 50%.
