PC + Laptop sales take a beating during the last fiscal: MAIT
Personal computer (PC) sale has dropped 7% for the first time owing to the ongoing economic downturn during the last fiscal. The total PC sales in the last fiscal stood at 67.9 lakh units, a decline of 7% over the previous year 2007-08, according to data compiled by the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT).
However, with the business sentiment gaining momentum all over, PC consumption in the current fiscal is poised to surpass 73 lakh level, showing a growth of 7%.
IT consumption in the last fiscal was badly hurt, especially in the second half of the fiscal, by the global slowdown. Notebook sales dipped by 17%, as against a 114% growth in the previous year and sales of desktops also declined 4%.
Multinational brands contributed nearly 51% of the total desktop market during the year 2008-09, showing an 8% growth over the previous year. The market share of the Indian brands reduced to 18% in the meantime, from earlier 22%. Sale of assembled and unbranded systems were also looked derailed, with de-growth of 31%, from 33% in the previous fiscal.
Infosys Sales + Profits under Pressure – EPS to be Lower by 9.6%
Infosys Technologies, India’s leading Software Professionals arbitrage and Manpower trading company is under tremendous pressure for the recently ended quarter. Sales down 2.9% QoQ andNet Profit down 5.3% QoQ. Had the Indian Rupee strengthend against USD, Infosys results could have been wors.
The management has guided EPS for FY 10 to be in the range of Rs. 94.59 and Rs. 96.00; YoY decline of 9.6% to 8.2%. Lets wait to hear more from them.
BSNL is set to introduce 3G services in Sikkim
State-run telecom service provider with a pan-India presence, Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), will soon launch third generation (3G) mobile services in Gangtok, Sikkim on August 15, 2009.
With the launch of 3G services in Gangtok, the services will be extended to three more districts. Further, telecom operator will increase its strength of Internet broadband services to 30 GB PPS (packets per second) and all 26 blocks in Sikkim would be offered broadband within a period of 100 days.
The launch of 3G services will offer high speed internet and video calling services on mobiles handsets, thus enhancing information and technology services in Sikkim.
Idea Cellular to launch GSM service in Chennai soon
Idea Cellular, an Aditya Birla Group company, is planning to launch its GSM service in Chennai soon, company officials announced. The telecom operator has already launched its services in Coimbatore, Madurai and other cities in Tamil Nadu.
It has operations in four southern states – Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. While the company acquired telecom operator Spice in Karnataka, it rolled out services in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
The southern region ranks fourth in the company’s overall subscriber base. Out of the 40 million subscribers the company has 25% from this region.
Unitech, is planning to launch mobile services jointly with Norway’s Telenor in the December quarter of this year.
Bharti Airtel inks managed services deal with Comviva
Bharti Airtel, the leading integrated telecom services provider in Asia has entered into a managed services deal with Comviva. The latter is a leading provider of integrated VAS solutions for mobile operators in emerging markets.
Bharti Airtel becomes the first telecom services operator in the world to have a managed services agreement for its value added services portfolio. As a part of this 3-year deal, Comviva will manage over 2000 of Airtel’s VAS nodes across India from various partners, to meet defined service level agreements.
Bharti Airtel is known for deploying innovative operational models by partnering with majors like Ericsson and Nokia Siemens to manage its network and IBM for its IT management.
Earlier, Bharti Airtel was awarded Service Provider of the Year at Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific ICT Awards as a recognition for excellent performance.
Infosys to open its centre in Brazil
In a move to serve its US clients on improved terms,leading technology service provider, Infosys Technologies is looking toopen software development and back office centre in Brazil in thecurrent year.
The unit, which is likely to beoperational in next 3-4 months, will occupy around 100 skilledemployees in the beginning and will also source new business for the ITmajor.
Tech biggies like TCS and Wipro arealready present in the region, which registered a whopping 75% growthin its IT exports to $1.4 billion during 2008.
Inthe recent past, the local IT firms have started their delivery centresin some of the big markets like China, Mexico and in Eastern Europe toserve their customers better.
Defence to vacate 45 MHz of spectrum for 2G + 4G
Building a hope for earlier start of third generation (3G) services by the private telecom operators, the defence ministry has agreed to vacate 45 MHz of scarce radio spectrum. The telecom ministry and defence establishments had been on a long standing disagreement on the time frame of spectrum vacation by the later.
In a memorandum of understanding, the defence sector agreed to immediately release 10 MHz spectrum for the 3G services and 5 MHz for the 2G services. The remaining spectrum would be released in a phased manner. Defence will release a total of 25 MHz for 3G and 20 MHz of 2G spectrum.
Spectrum is a scarce resource that is required to operate telecom services and one of the reasons for delay in 3G services by the private companies has been the disagreement regarding vacation of spectrum between defence and department of telecommunications. However, no that the defence has agreed to vacate spectrum; telecom industry may look forward to an earlier schedule fro the spectrum auction.
