India’s tea exports have declined by about 25% in the months of January compared with same month last year. As per the data released by tea board of India, total tea exports in January 2009 stood at 12.69 million kg compared with 16.89 million kg of tea exported in January 2008.
The decline was much less in value terms due to week Indian rupee which has depreciated nearly a third in the current fiscal. Total earning from tea exports stood at Rs 150.7 crore during January this year compared with Rs 165.1 crore in the same month last year.
Declining realizations have also started to tell on tea production which dipped marginally to 21.57 million kg in January against 21.62 million kg
