India Advance tax signals recovery

In a robust signal of recovery underway in the Indian economy, advance tax numbers for the second quarter of the fiscal have shown buoyant growth. The good thing is that the recovery party is being celebrated across most of the industries, especially the banking, automobile, oil and gas and infrastructure space.

Reliance Industries, the country’s largest company by market capitalisation, has paid Rs 1,157 crore against Rs 314 crore in the immediate previous quarter. Similarly, BPCL paid Rs 312 crore against Rs 40 crore. In the banking space, State Bank of India and ICICI Bank have paid advance tax of Rs 1,838 crore (Rs 1,068 crore in the first quarter of the fiscal 2009-10) and Rs 501 crore (Rs 250 crore) respectively.

Government may hike stake sale target in Coal India to push disinvestment

Indian government is considering disinvestment in the public sector Coal India. It is further understood to be contemplating hike in the stake sale target from 10% proposed earlier to 15% as it wants to put a sizeable number of shares in the market. The move may also be due to finance ministry considering anther proposal of mandating a 25% public float for listed companies. While the entire 25% stake may not be sold at one tranche, a significant first issue would raise chances of better returns for a follow on sale.

Why Murli Deora wants reconstitution of EGoM for RIL KG gas ?

After being criticized for disproportionate allocation of RIL KG basin gas, Petroleum minister Murli Deora has suggested reconstitution of the empowered group of ministers (EGoM) to decide on allocating gas to new customers.

After meeting with principal secretary to the Prime Minister, Deora has formally written to the Cabinet Secretary urging reconstitution of the eGoM on the lines of the previous ministerial group. Why does Murli Deora want this ? We believe someone in h current group is getting tough on Murli Deora.
