ISPs set to oppose new TRAI regulation

A host of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), including few telcos, have opposed TRAI’s regulations to ensure that ISPs provide internet connections based only on the capacity of traffic they can carry.

TRAI has proposed to introduce norms that would mention the ratio between the number of customers per unit bandwidth. The average international contention ratio for a home user package stands at 50:1 and that for business package at 20:1. The move has come in the wake of numerous complaints from the subscribers of the internet services that broadband/ dial up speeds were almost lower than the ISPs have promised for.

The regulator has contended that most ISPs compromise on quality by allowing a higher number of subscribers bringing down broadband speeds and congesting networks.
